Reading

I read J.R. Ward's Dark Lover within a 24 hour period. Good read. Interesting premise and I ordered the next four from Amazon. That's the nice thing about coming late to the party. I don't have to wait a year for the sequel. I also am working my way through Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Maass while waiting for my delivery. I've avoided the book for a while, but after seeing multiple reviews and blogs discussing it, I decided to give it a go. Besides since I'm stuck on my current WIP, this may unstick me. I had plenty of time to start the book since I got sick in the middle of the night on Saturday. So I sat in the bathroom and alternated between reading and emptying the contents of my stomach. Feel much better now. It seems like a good book so far. Will post more later.

I guess that is one time you'd WANT to come late the the party, huh? LOL

I haven't read the Donald Maass book, but I have read Between the Lines by Jessica Page Morrell and that one does the same thing for me as far as the inspiration goes. You'll have to let us know how Maass' book goes so we can put it on our Christmas wish lists! Of course it must be pretty damn good if you're able to keep reading whilst hurling ;) Glad you're feeling better!

yeah glad you are feeling better. If you can read anything while sick it must be good. I read somewhere that it not a good idea to read thought how to book until you have finish your first book. I guess so you know what they're talking about and can force on your writing weakest and strongths

I think that reading how to books actually help whether you've written anything or not. I like knowing more about crafting my novel. They also give me confidence to write. I can see going back through them when you are working on revisions to find where you have weak points. I don't think I would have made it through my first draft without having read some how to books first. Just my two cents. Everyone has to find what works best for them.

I know I went through a phase about a year ago where reading the craft books became an all out obsession. I can't tell you how much the things I learned about craft, the business, and plotting has made such a tremendous difference. I have about 20 books on my shelf right now, and they're worth their weight in gold.

When I look back on the stuff I wrote before I took my crash course in writing, I want to cry LOL

Annie, I don't want to totally hijack Amanda's blog, so I'll post them on mine :) I have quite a list, but every single one of them is great.
